FX‘s newest docuseries ‘Dear Mama’ tells the story of the late Tupac Shakur and the valuable lessons he learned from his mother activist Afeni Shakur. The five-part documentary series is titled after Tupac’s 1995 hit song of the same name.
The new teaser shows images of the two layering over each other in pieces, with one completing the other. Over these collaged images, a voice speaks, detailing the dynamics that played out between the extraordinary mother and son.
FX describes the new docuseries;
From Emmy Award®-nominated director Allen Hughes (The Defiant Ones) comes a five-part cinematic television event exploring two voices, activist Afeni Shakur and hip-hop icon Tupac Shakur, that could not be silenced. Told through the eyes of the people who knew them best, Dear Mama is an intimate wide-angle portrait of the most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history, whose unified message of freedom, equality, persecution and justice are more relevant today than ever.

The five-part series is set to explore both Tupac and Afeni’s voices as they worked with two different generations on their pursuit for equality and freedom.
Tupac died in 1996, just a year after the release of his track “Dear Mama,” and Afeni Shakur died in 2016.
