Transcendental Meditation helps Jennifer Lopez deal with stress and anxiety
Jennifer Lopez has revealed that Transcendental Meditation helps her cope with day-to-day stress and anxiety.
The 52-year-old singer and actress has revealed in the latest edition of her ‘On the JLo’ newsletter that hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons introduced her to TM guru Bob Roth who taught her the techniques she needed to use the mantra-based meditation to battle the strains of everyday life – and she says it was a huge help.
She wrote –
A few years ago, Russell Simmons gifted me a teacher to help me meditate … Transcendental Meditation is a simple practice that dramatically changes how we respond to stress and life’s challenges. With scientifically proven benefits – reduced stress and anxiety, and improved focus, sleep, resilience, creativity, and memory, to name a few – this five-thousand-year-old technique has a clear and direct impact on our very modern problems.”J LOPEZ
She gets two sessions of Transcendental Meditation every day, (which is the recommended number of sessions) and credits it with helping her through difficult moments.
Whenever I am in high moments of stress and anxiety in my life, I always go back to this practice. It’s been hard for me; I’m not going to lie. You have to do it 20 minutes in the morning and 20 minutes in the evening.
It’s almost as if during the meditation, your worries go away. You’re able to quiet your mind down.J LOPEZ
It’s a series of repeating the same mantra as you sit there with your eyes closed for 20 minutes. What winds up happening is a cleansing of the extra thoughts, anxiety, emotions and feelings that are bothering you.”J LOPEZ
Jennifer Lopez opens up about panic attacks in her newsletter, ‘On the JLo’.
She speaks about an exhaustion-induced panic attack that led her to alter the way she lives her hectic life.
There was a time in my life where I used to sleep 3 to 5 hours a night. I’d be on set all day and in the studio all night and doing junkets and filming videos on the weekends,” she revealed in the new edition of her On the JLo newsletter.
I was in my late 20s and I thought I was invincible,”J LOPEZ
She was on set one day when all the work and the stress it brought with it, coupled with not enough sleep to recuperate mentally, caught up with her.
“I was completely frozen,” Lopez said, adding that she had trouble with her vision and “couldn’t see clearly.” The panic attack symptoms began to scare her and the “fear compounded itself.”
“Now I know it was a classic panic attack brought on by exhaustion, but I had never even heard the term at the time,” said Lopez, adding that she thought she was going insane and went to her doctor to help alleviate her pain.
“My security guard on set came in and picked me up and drove me to the doctor. By the time I got there, I could at least speak again and I was so terrified I thought I was losing my mind,” she recalled.
Lopez thought that she was going crazy but the doctor told her , said, ‘No, you’re not crazy. You need sleep.’”
I realized how serious the consequences could be of ignoring what my body and mind needed to be healthy — and that’s where my journey to wellness began,”J LOPEZ
