“Football is much more than a sport, and has a unique magic power to bring people together, said FIFA President Gianni Infantino in an exclusive interview with Xinhua ahead of the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
He expects football to unite the world. Gianni hopes that the upcoming World Cup will be viewed by five billion people, more than half of the world’s population.
Gianni, two weeks ago wrote a letter to all 32 World Cup nations contesting the World Cup – urging them to focus fully on what will be going on in Qatar and not let the sport be dragged into ideological or political “battles”.
We know football does not live in a
vacuum and we are equally aware that there are many challenges and difficulties of a political nature all around the world,
But please do not allow football to be dragged into every ideological or political battle that exists.”
In a previous interview with Xinhua, China he talked about the economic benefits the FIFA World Cup brings, Infantino said football “is an important economic activity with a global GDP of hundreds of billions of US dollars, creating millions of jobs and bolstering economic growth, this is about growth, economic growth,” explained the FIFA Head.
