At San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel and Robert Downey Jr. excited the audience and MCU fans worldwide with the announcement of Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU in “Avengers: Doomsday,” directed by the Russo Brothers.
Last week, it was reported that the Russo Brothers were in talks to direct two new Avengers films, and Marvel has now confirmed their return with both “Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.”
In a dramatic reveal, Downey Jr. appeared on stage in a Victor von Doom costume, removing the mask to a shocked and excited audience.
He announced,
New mask, same task,”
and hinted at the film’s release in May 2026.
While we are all eager; questions remain about whether Downey Jr. will play a new character or a variation of Tony Stark in an alternate timeline.
Previously, Downey Jr. expressed his willingness to return to Marvel, stating,
It’s too integral a part of my DNA. That role chose me. And look, I always say, ‘Never, ever bet against Kevin Feige.’ It is a losing bet. He’s the house. He will always win.”
