“Joker: Folie à Deux” Flops at Box Office, Faces Massive Losses
Joker: Folie à Deux has become a box office disaster, failing to replicate the success of its 2019 predecessor.
After two weeks, the sequel has earned only $51.5 million domestically and $165 million globally, a far cry from the original Joker, which grossed $96.2 million domestically in just three days.
With production costs at $200 million and an additional $100 million for marketing, the film is on track to lose up to $200 million, with insiders projecting a total gross of only $215 million globally, Variety Reports.
Folie à Deux, a dark musical starring Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga, has received poor reviews, scoring 33% on Rotten Tomatoes and a “D” CinemaScore.
Despite Warner Bros.’ hope that international markets, including China, could boost revenue, the film’s financial outlook remains grim. However, the studio could recoup some losses when the film hits home entertainment platforms on October 29.
The original Joker was a major box office hit, earning over $1 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie internationally. —-
But with Folie à Deux’s inflated budget—driven by high salaries for key stars and director Todd Phillips—the sequel is struggling to find profitability in today’s box office climate.
