Five-time-Grammy-Winning artist Lil Wayne made a candid appearance on Emmanuel Acho’s Podcast where he opened up about his experiences and mental health struggles, revealing a suicide bid when he was only 12. He disclosed shooting himself in the chest.
His issues started when he was 10 and by the time, he was 12, his mother Jacida Carter discovered that he had been skipping school. He knew his mother was disappointed in him and he feared that she would stop him form rapping. This led to his attempted suicide.
He recounts being too scared to shoot himself in the head, so he decided to aim for his heart and shoot himself in the chest. According to him it was painless. Lil Wayne remembers police banging on the door. He had called the police before the attempt, after which he had gone for his mother’s gun in her room.
. “So, I didn’t die that day, but somebody was gone. She’s never been that way [again].” Wayne stated describing her mother’s change after the incident.
The rapper hopes to help anyone who is struggling with mental health by sharing his experiences, being fearless and vulnerable. He adds that he is happy doing what he loves and he is now in a better place.
