The Nigerian Government has lifted the suspension of Twitter after seven months.

The Nigerian Government announced the decision to suspend Twitter operations in June 2021. The Government cited ‘the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence’ as one of the reasons for the ban.

Nigerians have continued to access Twitter after the suspension using virtual private networks (VPNs).

Twitter is a very popular platform in Nigeria. It has been used to push important hashtags like #EndSars, a slogan that calls for the disbanding of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a notorious unit in the Nigerian Police with a long record of abuses.
