Disney and Marvel’s latest installment, The Marvels, made a lackluster debut with an opening weekend of $47 million USD, marking the lowest opener in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Contrary to initial expectations of $60 million USD to $65 million USD (already adjusted from projections of $75 million USD to $80 million USD), the superhero film fell short.
Its international box office performance also disappointed, earning $63.3 million USD from 51 territories, resulting in a global start of $110 million USD — $30 million USD below Disney’s forecast.
A report by Variety suggests that negative publicity and limited promotion due to the SAG strike contributed to the underwhelming opening.
David A. Gross of Franchise Entertainment Research commented,
This is an unprecedented Marvel box office collapse.
The strikes hurt the film’s marketing,
but that’s not what’s driving these numbers.”
The Marvels, directed by Nia DaCosta, serves as the direct sequel to 2019’s Captain Marvel and features Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani in leading roles.
