The AI Thriller ATLAS released on Netflix 24 May and has quickly become the most-watched English film on the platform; just a few days after its debut.
Despite its popularity among viewers, the film has received mixed reactions from critics.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the action AI Thriller holds a low rating of 17%, while on IMDb it stands at 5.6%, and on Metacritic, it has a mere 38%.
Critics have pointed out issues with the CGI and storyline, with some viewers unable to finish the entire film.
The plot centers on : A brilliant data analyst with a deep distrust of AI who finds it may be her only hope when a mission to capture a renegade robot goes awry.”
One critic on Rotten Tomatoes questions,
Meanwhile, another praises it as
Opinions vary, with one calling it sluggish and unoriginal, and another noting,
ATLAS is expected to top the Netflix charts globally and in many countries this week.
Another critic writes on Rotten Tomatoes,
Another notes,
On IMDB, one critic writes,
Terrible and boring. A continuous monologue by the protagonist. This happens when the actors are also producers (they put money into it): the film is totally focused on them.
They should have the humility (which they normally don’t have) to let the director do his job.
This film is not the only example of this. I have to write more to fill the minimum char requirement. So I can continue …
The film is supposed to be a SciFi / Adventure / Action, but the 90% is only JLo talking with the AI of the robot.
The quality too of the dialogue is really low … only trivial sentences. Just to finish: a story really reduced, based on a single fact. Really to avoid.
Another advices,
I have to stop watching YouTube reviews and reading other people’s opinions before watching movies. I didn’t expect much from this. Matter of fact, I expected much less.
But somehow it has surprised me. I see people in the reviews cry and moan that it was good but could have been better. By what metric?
Was this what you had expected? Was there a baseline this movie had to follow? A book it was based on? No.
This may not bring nothing revolutionary to the science fiction genre, but it’s more original than most things that have been coming out lately.
Lopez told Netflix,
Atlas is someone who has basically shut out the world around her, She doesn’t trust anybody and doesn’t want anything to do with AI,
I always see everything as a love story, but this is a different kind of love between two beings who connect in disastrous circumstances, and teach each other how to be more human.”
